Memorial Day

This weekend when the burgers are on the grill, the sun is shining (hopefully), and family and friends gather to celebrate this extended weekend, let’s take time to remember what Memorial Weekend is about. Memorial Day is a time where we reflect on the Service men and women of this country and the ultimate sacrifice they made for our wonderful country. Below is a brief history of Memorial Day written by TIME magazine.

“. . .Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, conjuring images of picnics, barbecues or just a lazy day off. But originally the holiday was charged with deeper meaning — and with controversy.

The exact origins of Memorial Day are disputed, with at least five towns claiming to have given birth to the holiday sometime near the end of the Civil War. Yale University historian David Blight places the first Memorial Day in April 1865, when a group of former slaves gathered at a Charleston, S.C., horse track turned Confederate prison where more than 250 Union soldiers had died. Digging up the soldiers’ mass grave, they interred the bodies in individual graves, built a 100-yd. fence around them and erected an archway over the entrance bearing the words “Martyrs of the Race Course.” On May 1, 1865, some 10,000 black Charleston residents, white missionaries, teachers, schoolchildren and Union troops marched around the Planters’ Race Course, singing and carrying armfuls of roses. Gathering in the graveyard, the crowd watched five black preachers recite scripture and a children’s choir sing spirituals and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” While the story is largely forgotten today, some historians consider the gathering the first Memorial Day.

Despite scattered celebrations in small towns, it took three more years for the holiday to become widely observed. In a proclamation, General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic — an organization of former soldiers and sailors — dubbed May 30, 1868, Decoration Day, which was “designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion.” On Decoration Day that year, General James Garfield gave a speech at Arlington National Cemetery. Afterward, 5,000 observers adorned the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers entombed at the cemetery.

At the outset, Memorial Day was so closely linked with the Union cause that many Southern states refused to celebrate it. They acquiesced only after World War I, when the holiday was expanded beyond honoring fallen Civil War soldiers to recognizing Americans who died fighting in all wars. It was also renamed Memorial Day. Some critics say that by making the holiday more inclusive, however, the original focus — on, as Frederick Douglass put it, the moral clash between “slavery and freedom, barbarism and civilization” — has been lost. Most Southern states still recognize Confederate Memorial Day as an official holiday, and many celebrate it on the June birthday of Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederacy. But Texas, for one, observes the holiday on Robert E. Lee’s birthday, Jan. 19 — which also happens to be Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The long-cherished Memorial Day tradition of wearing red poppies got its start in 1915. While reading Ladies’ Home Journal, an overseas war secretary named Moina Michael came across the famous World War I poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae, which begins, “In Flanders fields the poppies blow/ Between the crosses, row on row.” Moved, she vowed always to wear a silk poppy in honor of the American soldiers who gave up their lives for their country. She started selling them to friends and co-workers and campaigned for the red flowers to become an official memorial emblem. The American Legion embraced the symbol in 1921, and the tradition has spread to more than 50 other countries, including England, France and Australia.

With the National Holiday Act of 1971, Congress moved Memorial Day from May 30 to the last Monday in May. But critics say guaranteeing that the holiday is part of a three-day weekend promotes relaxation instead of stressing the holiday’s true meaning. In 1989, Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii introduced a bill to move the holiday back to the fixed date of May 30. He has reintroduced it in every Congress since then — with no success.

While traditional Memorial Day rites have dwindled in many towns, they remain strong at Arlington National Cemetery. Since the 1950s, on the Thursday before Memorial Day, soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division have placed American flags at each of the more than 260,000 graves there. During the weekend, they patrol around the clock to make sure each flag remains aloft. On the holiday itself, every year about 5,000 people turn out to see the President or Vice President give a speech and lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. And other Americans are encouraged to observe in a more solitary fashion. At 3 p.m. local time, according to the 2000 National Moment of Remembrance Act, which was passed to emphasize the meaning of Memorial Day, all Americans should “voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to ‘Taps. . .'”

Manhattan Beach to celebrate the planet!

On Earth day, Saturday April 27, Manhattan Beach will celebrate our beautiful earth. Volunteers and Organizations Improving the Community’s Enviroment (VOICE), alongside Sustanible Manahattan Beach and Parks Make Life Better present a concert and celebration that will take place in Polliwog park and be fun for the entire community. The event will commence at 11 a.m.  and  end at 4 p.m. The event will feature eco-friendly shopping, gourmet vegetarian food trucks, live music and dancing, alternative fuel vehicles and even eco-waste and paper shredding. Below is a brief schedule of the events as outlined on the VOICE website:

New Manhattan Beach Restaurant, Circa

Manhattan Beach has welcomed another Restaurant, Circa, into the downtown Manhattan Beach, on Manhattan Ave. Circa, is a  warm, vintage, industrial space that has 130 seats. Circa serves global cuisine that is tapa style, or meant for sharing. Award-winning chef Octavio Becerra, created the menu items, and made sure to include global flavors in his cooking. The global flavors  coupled with the cozy nature of the decor gives restaurant goers, the ultimate restaurant experience. Dishes that are recommended to try at Circa include the steamed buns / crispy pork belly / quail egg / spicy scallion relish and Korean beef short ribs with spicy root vegetables.

It is Good Ol’ Groundhog Day in the Southbay!

Today is February 2, 2013. You know what that means right? Yes, it does mean we are 12 days off from Valentine’s Day, and yes it is Saturday. But what else does February 2 mean? It is Ground hog Day in the good ol’ Southbay!

According to German Folklore, when the Ground hog comes out of hibernation and see’s its’ shadow it will burrow again for six more weeks, which means the Winter will be longer. If the Groundhog doesn’t see its’ shadow, that means that Spring is around the corner. I know that furry, and awkward looking rodents don’t predict the weather, and I am not even sure they live in Manhattan Beach, but given the strange weather that the Southbay has been experiencing, it might be beneficial to pay attention to what the groundhog does. Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, and the surrounding areas have been experiencing a cold winter overall. The weather is starting to warm up, however Manhattan Locals are still strolling downtown Manhattan in North Face jackets and UGG boots , wondering when the signature Manhattan beach weather will start.

Whether the groundhog sees its’ shadow and burrows for six more weeks of Winter, or if it does not see its shadow and we dive in for Spring, one thing will be certain…. Manhattan Beach will have a wide variety of happenings and activities that you and your friends and family can enjoy for the month of February, including the Sway and Swing Dance club and Ski Week! The only scheduled event on groundhog day in Manhattan will be the closing reception for the JUNK Art Show at the Creative Art Center. Gotta love the Manhattan Beach Farmers’ Market

I have to admit that when I explore the Manhattan Beach Farmers Market almost every Tuesday, I am at odds with myself. Do I go for a hearty Philly Cheese steak? Or do I go for a healthy stack of organic, locally grown vegetables? Tough choice…

The Manhattan Beach Farmers Market is a great staple of the Manhattan Beach Community. It is a place where runners can pass by and grab a healthy bite or where working people can go on their lunch break and grab something to eat before heading back to the office. The Manhattan Beach Farmers Market is a great place for families as well. Parents can take their kids to the farmers market and hitch a ride on the Downtown train, which is a special feature of the Manhattan Beach farmers market. Aside from selling various organic foods and items such as fruits, vegetables, olive oil, and handmade crafts. The farmers market also has a wide variety of food vendors including Crepe vendors, Greek Cuisine vendors, and the wonderful Philly Cheese steak vendor. The aromas that fill the air are delicious, the sight of kids playing and laughing is enjoyable, and the live music is harmonious… did I mention that the Manhattan Beach Farmers Market has live music?

The Farmers Market is a great opportunity to support local business and growers, Relax and enjoy a great atmosphere, and have a nice Philly Cheese steak…or organic salad. ON THE FENCE ABOUT SELLING?

It is a rare day when at least one article is not in the news regarding the mortgage meltdown, national foreclosure statistics and concern over the impending tsunami of foreclosures soon to flood the market.

We could blog for days on national statistics – but we’ll let others do that.  We are concentrated on the Beach Cities, specifically Manhattan Beach. We are seeing a local market that is long on buyers and short on sellers!  The frequent topic of discussions among Realtors is frustration at the low inventory of available houses for sale. We brought out two new listings in February—we received offers within days of our market launch.  Both generated multiple offers. One sold close to asking price, the other went overbid!

So what is going on? Has the local market passed the bottom?

It is quite clear that it has!

The Beach Cities residential properties have sold off dramatically in recent months. We see the effects of this fact every weekend at open houses.

We meet many qualified buyers actively searching for the right home but frustrated by the very limited inventory to choose from.

This is exactly the opposite situation that we were observing not many months ago when the market was long on sellers and short on real buyers.

Clearly the local market has passed the bottom of this cycle and, interestingly, has also just barely passed the balance point between buyers and sellers!

Yes, as strange as it may seem from the point of view only months ago, when we had a buyers market for years prior, we are now seeing the local market in the Beach Cities beginning to rotate ever so slightly back to a sellers’ market!

Available inventory has dropped to 3 months of sales activity or less. Much of this available inventory amounts to a “legacy” of overpriced or under conditioned, or both, properties that languish on the market.

Quality, well priced properties that are offered for sale now generate immediate interest and offers.  Proper presentation and pricing for value of properties offered is critical as buyers are still very focused on real value and will not press offer prices much above reasonable, “appraise-able” values.

This is why over priced or under conditioned properties continue to languish.

There are 91 available and 72 in escrow; so about 1.26 available for every 1 in escrow.

Using an approximate 60 day escrow period Manhattan has about 2.5 months inventory available.

In closing, this is the lowest level of available inventory that we’ve seen in the Beach Cities market in years. While parts of the rest of the country are still experiencing an excess of inventory, here, that phase of the market cycle is behind us.
