In the spirit of celebrating local business, esteemed writer Heidi Butzine, author of “Shop Local, A Practical Pain Free Guide to Shopping with Purpose,” will be at SAGE, signing copies of her book. According to an article posted by Online PR News released earlier this month, Butzine explained how shopping local can reduce everyone’s “carbon footprint”: “An important step towards leading a green lifestyle includes sustainability and taking steps towards conservation. Shopping local is directly related not only because it means less driving thereby reducing harmful exhaust emissions but more money spent locally stays within the community supporting the sustainability of our local economy. Following the tips I offer in my book, in some cases I’ve actually spent less at independently owned local businesses and had less waste by getting better quality products that last longer.”

Lock it or lose it! The 90% Rule

burglar

Have you had anything stolen from your car or home?  Do you know anyone who has?

Shocking statistic:  Over 90% of thefts are due to unlocked doors and windows – either in your car or home.

Although Manhattan Beach is a safe community, there are people who will commit a crime of opportunity if given the chance. This is where you come in – remove as many opportunities as possible for people to steal from you.  Having an unlocked door or window is an invitation to steal.

The Manhattan Beach Police Department has instituted an awareness  Program “Lock It or Lose It!”  to make people aware that  — in many cases —prevention is in your Hands!!

Here are some tips for keeping your belongings safe.

•             LOCK your vehicle at all times.

•             KEEP your valuables – laptop, camera, MP3 player, GPS system, cell phone, purse, wallet, briefcase and other items out of plain view

•             LEAVE no trace or sign of electronics, such as docking stations or connector cables in plain view

•             REMOVE your third row seats and store them in a locked garage

•             DON’T leave packages or shopping bags visible in your car

•             UNLOAD your car immediately when you get home

•             Do not leave items in your car overnight

•             SET your alarm or anti-theft device

As one famous idiom explains: “One’s trash is another person’s treasure.” What is useless to one maybe valuable to another. Artist Bob Van Breda took this expression to a new level when he created his exhibit “JUNK.” This exhibit is a demonstration of creativity and interactive art. One unique feature of “JUNK” is that it allows viewers to look at the art from an interactive perspective, and judge the art.Viewers look at various junk and other items and determine if they have aesthetic significance, cultural value, historical value, or if the items are “simply junk.” This exhibit allows the viewers to see ordinary items in a whole new way, and the interacive quality of the exhibit strengthens the community’s overall understanding of visual arts.

The Creative Arts Center in Manhattan Beach, features art from Local and international artists. The curator for this exhibit is ARTS Manhattan Chairman of the Board, Homeira Goldstein. The exhibit opened this past December and will remain open until February 2, 2013. If you , or anyone you know interested in Art or are curious about learning more about visual Art, The Creative Art center is a great place to bring family and friend. The Exhibit is free, and open to the public. For more information and details of the exhibit, including hours of operation, please visit the announcement page on the City of Manhattan Beach website.
