As one famous idiom explains: “One’s trash is another person’s treasure.” What is useless to one maybe valuable to another. Artist Bob Van Breda took this expression to a new level when he created his exhibit “JUNK.” This exhibit is a demonstration of creativity and interactive art. One unique feature of “JUNK” is that it allows viewers to look at the art from an interactive perspective, and judge the art.Viewers look at various junk and other items and determine if they have aesthetic significance, cultural value, historical value, or if the items are “simply junk.” This exhibit allows the viewers to see ordinary items in a whole new way, and the interacive quality of the exhibit strengthens the community’s overall understanding of visual arts.

The Creative Arts Center in Manhattan Beach, features art from Local and international artists. The curator for this exhibit is ARTS Manhattan Chairman of the Board, Homeira Goldstein. The exhibit opened this past December and will remain open until February 2, 2013. If you , or anyone you know interested in Art or are curious about learning more about visual Art, The Creative Art center is a great place to bring family and friend. The Exhibit is free, and open to the public. For more information and details of the exhibit, including hours of operation, please visit the announcement page on the City of Manhattan Beach website. The presents are opened, and the ornaments are removed from the tree…so now what? Do you know where to put that Holiday tree? Until January 18, 2013 the City of Manhattan Beach will be taking trees to be recycled for free. Waste Management, will be in charge of this recycling effort and encourages all Manhattan Beach residents to participate. There are a few guidelines to this recycling effort. All decorations should be removed from the tree and all trees should be less than 7 feet tall. If the trees are larger than seven feet, the holiday trees will need to be cut into pieces. The trees also must be placed on the curb on your collection day to ensure pick-up, if not, the trees will have to wait until the next week to be picked up. For more details on the holiday tree collection, click here.

It is that Time of Year…

It is that time of year. The New Year is a landmark for most people. The New Year is a stepping stone, a time to reflect on accomplishments of the past year, and a time to make new commitments for self-improvement. Manhattan Beach is not only a great community to live in, but it is a great space for the locals and visitors to make their resolutions come to fruition. For example, one of my new year’s resolutions is to do more cardio workouts. I will accomplish this by making effort to take power walks down the beautiful Manhattan Beach Strand and playing beach volleyball in the summertime.

Another example of a great resolution is to spend more time with family and loved ones; Manhattan Beach is a beach town that offers many family friendly activities including community events such as: Concerts in the Park. Lastly, if a resolution would be to venture out and try new restaurants,  many of the restaurants in downtown Manhattan offer a wide variety of cuisines and that are healthy and taste phenomenal.

New Years is about a fresh start, a “clean slate”. Manhattan Beach is a great beach city to take those first steps in following through with New Year’s resolutions. The landscape and the abundance of opportunities to start new are endless.  Cheers to a new start!  Check  us out at http://www.davesalzman.com Happy new year!
