In the spirit of celebrating local business, esteemed writer Heidi Butzine, author of “Shop Local, A Practical Pain Free Guide to Shopping with Purpose,” will be at SAGE, signing copies of her book. According to an article posted by Online PR News released earlier this month, Butzine explained how shopping local can reduce everyone’s “carbon footprint”: “An important step towards leading a green lifestyle includes sustainability and taking steps towards conservation. Shopping local is directly related not only because it means less driving thereby reducing harmful exhaust emissions but more money spent locally stays within the community supporting the sustainability of our local economy. Following the tips I offer in my book, in some cases I’ve actually spent less at independently owned local businesses and had less waste by getting better quality products that last longer.”

And last, but certainly not least, “Two Guns” Coffee Shop located on Sepulveda will be serving their coffee at the Sage Expo from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Two Guns is a local hangout that proudly supports local vendors such as Cake Bake Shop and Bread Bar.

It is Good Ol’ Groundhog Day in the Southbay!

Today is February 2, 2013. You know what that means right? Yes, it does mean we are 12 days off from Valentine’s Day, and yes it is Saturday. But what else does February 2 mean? It is Ground hog Day in the good ol’ Southbay!

According to German Folklore, when the Ground hog comes out of hibernation and see’s its’ shadow it will burrow again for six more weeks, which means the Winter will be longer. If the Groundhog doesn’t see its’ shadow, that means that Spring is around the corner. I know that furry, and awkward looking rodents don’t predict the weather, and I am not even sure they live in Manhattan Beach, but given the strange weather that the Southbay has been experiencing, it might be beneficial to pay attention to what the groundhog does. Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, and the surrounding areas have been experiencing a cold winter overall. The weather is starting to warm up, however Manhattan Locals are still strolling downtown Manhattan in North Face jackets and UGG boots , wondering when the signature Manhattan beach weather will start.

Whether the groundhog sees its’ shadow and burrows for six more weeks of Winter, or if it does not see its shadow and we dive in for Spring, one thing will be certain…. Manhattan Beach will have a wide variety of happenings and activities that you and your friends and family can enjoy for the month of February, including the Sway and Swing Dance club and Ski Week! The only scheduled event on groundhog day in Manhattan will be the closing reception for the JUNK Art Show at the Creative Art Center. Stay tuned to this blog for more on what is happening in the 90266, also visit the Dave Salzman  website and Facebook Page!

Lock it or lose it! The 90% Rule

burglar

Have you had anything stolen from your car or home?  Do you know anyone who has?

Shocking statistic:  Over 90% of thefts are due to unlocked doors and windows – either in your car or home.

Although Manhattan Beach is a safe community, there are people who will commit a crime of opportunity if given the chance. This is where you come in – remove as many opportunities as possible for people to steal from you.  Having an unlocked door or window is an invitation to steal.

The Manhattan Beach Police Department has instituted an awareness  Program “Lock It or Lose It!”  to make people aware that  — in many cases —prevention is in your Hands!!

Here are some tips for keeping your belongings safe.

•             LOCK your vehicle at all times.

•             KEEP your valuables – laptop, camera, MP3 player, GPS system, cell phone, purse, wallet, briefcase and other items out of plain view

•             LEAVE no trace or sign of electronics, such as docking stations or connector cables in plain view

•             REMOVE your third row seats and store them in a locked garage

•             DON’T leave packages or shopping bags visible in your car

•             UNLOAD your car immediately when you get home

•             Do not leave items in your car overnight

•             SET your alarm or anti-theft device

New Year’s Resolutions — Local

Well, it’s the second week of the new year and I am just now deciding on my New Year’s Resolutions… Yes, I know, it has taken me awhile. I actually spent the first week deciding if I was going to make any at all, but the universal pull (guilt) has won out.  I have to admit, I am not doing anything unique, it is the usual line up of – consistent exercise, eating lean, taking more time for family, updating and evaluating my volunteer activities and doing my best to support our local community with local purchases and services. My outside-the-box resolution brain has been in low gear, but there is something to be said for keeping up and keeping on with the right things to do.  We are lucky because we are in a place where we have suport services and goods to make all these resolutions happen.   We just thought we would post a few local buisnesses and services where you can support those resolutions right here in 90266.

LOCATION.VIEW.EXQUISITE DESIGN.AND A VALUE?

Whether you are a buyer or you just want to look at beautiful pictures of a home ‘done right,’ take a look at 612 John Street – new on the market.  This home is well designed, tastefully appointed and just simply has the right flow to the living space, not to mention a beautiful master retreat, a resort style pool and a guest house!  The home has recently been purchased by a relocation company and is being marketed at a price that is essentially the same price that it sold for 2 years ago. A reasonably priced/stunning home? Not an oxymoron – just a bright spot in 90266.

Today’s Bright Spot on the Market

Been looking and looking. . .but unable to find your new home in North Redondo? Take a look at these two new listings:  1727 Carlson Lane and 1525 Goodman Avenue.  Carlson is a recently re-freshed, but basically original condition Tall and Skinny. For those who want a great location (one way street and one block from Jefferson Elementary School!) it is a blank canvas that needs color and a personal touch ($679,000).  Several  blocks away at 1525 Goodman, basically the same floor plan, but WOW, the current owners have already added the color and style ($685,000).  Their cozy yard, furnishings and art make this property pop!  As always with real estate decisions there are trade-offs.  We like the Carlson location better, but if you want the already painted palette, Goodman is a wonderful choice!
